On the eve of the 21st century, Sissako, an African filmmaker living in France returns to Sokolo, a small village in Mali, to join his father. There he runs into Nana, a young girl also visiting from the village. Thus begins a contemplation on the never healed relationship between Africa and  Europe.
Sissako and his father listen to the millennial celebrations in Paris over the radio, just about the only piece of the modern world to be found in the village.  Desperately trying to communicate with France from the minimal post-office, he discovers that daily life hasn’t changed much for the village inhabitants. Each person continues on at his or her own pace whilst the world celebrates the year 2000, and that the beginning of a new millenium has little meaning for them.
