It follows the lives of a range of characters from across the social spectrum, focusing specifically on the rivalry between the families of two businessmen: The banker Hans Christian Varnæs, an established local worthy, and social climber Mads (Andersen-)Skjern, who arrives in town as the series opens.
                    Mads Skjern arrives in the small Danish town of Korsbæk in 1929. Hans Christian Varnæs, manager of the town bank, refuses him a loan to set up a clothes shop. Instead he receives money elsewhere, and his shop is soon a success, a sign of the changing times during the following decades.
