As this series opens, Banks must learn to work with dramatic changes to his team. Detective Annie Cabbot is off on maternity leave soon to be replaced by the impossible-to-read Helen Morton. A new case becomes personal in Strange Affair when Banks discovers that his brother Roy is missing and Roy's girlfriend has been shot dead. In Dry Bones That Dream a seemingly ordinary man is murdered in his home for no apparent reason, but the unearthing of a secret double life leads Banks to explore the question of identity. A young girl is found murdered in Innocent Graves. All the evidence seems to suggest her drama teacher is the guilty man. Banks believes they have a watertight case, until the trial collapses. It’s up to Banks to find the real motive and the killer.
                    With Annie due for maternity leave icily efficient inspector Helen Morton joins Banks' team to investigate the murder of Jennifer Lewis,shot dead in her car,where Banks' address is also discovered on a scrap of paper. Banks himself disappears following an answer phone message for help from his wide boy brother Roy,but Roy is missing from home and neither Corinne,his girl-friend,or his father Arthur know of his whereabouts. His business partner Gareth Lambert tells Banks that Roy was having an affair with Jennifer and CCTV from the garage where she bought petrol an hour before her murder shows Jennifer with Roy. Whilst Helen Morton is questioning Banks the news comes in that Roy has been shot dead with the same gun that killed Jennifer Lewis.
