She was captured and imprisoned a number of times, and was personally commended by General Stonewall Jackson for her distinguished services on behalf of his army and her country. Belle Boyd went through the zone of fire on a battlefield, escaping by dropping to the ground between every volley and then jumping to her feet and running toward the Confederate battery. The scene opens with the home of Belle Boyd in neutral ground. She and her girl companions are "sewing-up" the gallant battle-scarred Southerners, whose uniforms were necessarily neglected after the first few years of strenuous service.
