【内容简介】
莱斯特-伯哈姆已经活不到一年了，而现在似乎还看不出什么迹象……
他的家住在平静的市郊，他有一个美丽的妻子卡罗琳和一个未成年的女儿珍妮。但是，他的家庭并不像外人看到的那么幸福。他的妻子事业有成，已经拥有了一个自己的房地产公司，而他自己在工作中却没有取得任何的成就，他为一家广告公司已经乾了整整14年，他对自己的工作感到厌倦，因为他讨厌那些他不得不巴结的顾客以及公司里自以为是的老板。他相信他的妻子一定认为他是一个失败者，因为他们已经有好几年没有碰过对方了。安吉拉把自己的精力都花在了事业上，她看起来是一个自信的事业女性的形象，然而她的感情却在渴望着抚慰。女儿珍妮憎恨自己的父母，因为她感到他们几乎从未真正注意过她，于是她整日围着女友安吉拉转，而一天她发现她的新邻居里奇正在用摄像机偷拍她，这使她每天的生活开始充满刺激。
终于有一天，当莱斯特遇上了刚做完中学篮球赛啦啦队的珍妮和安吉拉时，他立刻被安吉拉的美丽深深地打动，心中的那种久已死去的感觉好像又重新的复燃了。从此莱斯特的生活开始发生变化：他勇敢地面对老板辞退了工作，他开始注意自己的形象，他还在里奇那里买回一些上等的大麻吸食，已过中年的他落入了一个未成年少女的爱情陷阱。与此同时，卡罗琳对莱斯特的变化也产生了反应，她开始与房地产商“国王”私通，事态逐渐地向着十分有趣却无法预料的方向发展，直到有一天里奇父亲举起枪口，对准了莱斯特……
获奥斯卡8项提名的美国电影《美国丽人》引起众人关注。“少年爱上红玫瑰，荒野上的玫瑰”，看完《美国丽人》，便想到这句歌词，只不过少年换成中年人，爱上红玫瑰的，是电影中40岁的父亲。爱上自己女儿的同学，真是一件尴尬的事情。可是对于父亲来说，未免不是一件好事。爱情给了他勇气，使他终于辞掉了讨厌的工作，终于可以不再唯唯诺诺地做人。虽然爱情让他最终死去，可是在死的瞬间，他的眼中反射出所有人生的亮点。“我为自己愚蠢而渺小的生活自豪”，他说。一个人如果能在死的时候说出这样的话，即使算不上高大，至少也可以问心无愧了。
40岁是让人沮丧的年纪，一切似乎都开始走下坡路。日复一日的工作，讨厌透顶的上司，不再相爱的家庭，相信很多人都和父亲一样，在那个年纪，经历着人生荒凉冷漠的一段。这时候，美丽的女中学生突然出现了。父亲对她的向往，不只是性的期待，还伴随着玫瑰的色彩。他想象着女孩躺在玫瑰大床上，躺在玫瑰的澡盆里，脱下衣服，胸前飞出无数的玫瑰花瓣。这些玫瑰的存在，使父亲对女孩的情感，不仅仅是肉欲，也闪烁着一点与他年纪不相称的浪漫。落寞与诱惑的组合，撩人如荒野上的玫瑰。
每个人感受到的美是不同的。在电影中，父亲迷恋年轻可爱的肉体；母亲追求成功，哪怕仅仅是表面上的成功；而那两个年轻人，则会坐在黑暗中，看白色的废纸在风中飘舞15分钟。这些美其实都是平等的，并没有孰优孰劣之分。归根结底，美是一种被打动的感觉。在我们对一切变得漠然的时候，美为我们提供了一个情感的出口，让我们忽然明白，原来自己也可以生动地存在。
