Thirteen year old Mary is taught what to expect during adolescence. With the aid of a diagram Mary is shown how her body will prepare itself for producing babies and is taught what to expect each month. She learns how to choose and wear sanitary pads (which come in very discreet brown paper packages), how to dispose of them and even how to deal with 'chaffing'.
The kindly maternal voiceover also reassures her that it is OK to wash her hair but do be careful not to get a chill. Bizarrely, she was warned against getting her feet wet. Just in case Mary does feel out of sorts she's advised to "see if there's a hot drink going". Dancing, cycling and hockey are all fine but it's probably "as well to put off your swim".
