Are gated communities a rational response to increasing crime and social unrest, or do they offer a false sense of security and contribute to tensions between the poor and the well–off. This eye–opening documentary takes us behind the walls of “common interest developments” from Johannesburg to Las Vegas and asks why such communities exist and what the realities of living “on the safe side” are.
Corinna Wichmann was born in Warendorf in 1970. She received her Diploma in Photography and Film Design at the Academy of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld 1996. Since 1995 Corinna Wichmann works as freelance Photographer, Writer and Director of Photography. In 2002 she received her postgraduate Diploma in Film and Television at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.
                    Nowadays, the majority of people live in cities. Poverty, crime and chaos pose major problems for the often helpless administrations. Finding a secure, distinguished and independent neighborhood presents a growing challenge for the urban middle class. Surprisingly, the solution for all sorts of menaces appears to be the same worldwide: electric fences, high walls, armed security guards and CCTV. The higher income class draws back into private residential enclaves that evolve all over the world. If you belong to those who can afford it, Gated Communities seem to offer a life 'ON THE SAFE SIDE'. The gates of three secluded, high end Gated Communities swung open for this film. We meet Brenda, a real estate agent in Johannesburg, a city that's shaken by crime. R.K. takes us beyond the walls surrounding his home, on a tour through Indian politics, fighting for the improvement of Bangalore's chaotic infrastructure.
