The DVD features performances from Knowles' 4 Intimate Nights with Beyoncé concert, which was held at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City in August 2011. The concert was held on four non-consecutive nights, where Knowles performed songs from her album 4, as well as her previous hits in prior albums and with former girl group Destiny's Child. Backed by her all-female band, the performances included stories detailing Knowles' journey before the album 4, including her years before and with Destiny's Child. Live at Roseland: Elements of 4 also includes never before seen personal footage from Knowles, including her times with Destiny's Child, traveling and partying with family, Knowles' rehearsal of "1+1" backstage at American Idol which was filmed by her husband Jay-Z, other live performances and a sneak peak at Knowles' wedding dress.
The standard edition of Live at Roseland: Elements of 4 was released exclusively through Walmart in the United States on November 21, 2011. The deluxe edition titled, Live at Roseland: Elements Of 4, was released as a two-disc DVD worldwide from November 25, 2011, featuring the complete concert, bonus offstage footage, a 20-page booklet and a video anthology featuring seven music videos from 4. It includes videos for "1+1", "Best Thing I Never Had", "Party", "Love on Top", "Countdown", "Run the World (Girls)" and "Dance for You".
                    When Beyoncé took the stage back in August for four electrifying nights at the famed Roseland Ballroom, only 3,500 lucky fans per night, who bought those tickets in a record 22 seconds, were able to catch the intimate shows in the historic New York venue where she managed to turn a club into a coliseum. Praised as "robust," "finely-tuned," and "compelling" by The New York Times, "4 Intimate Nights With Beyoncé" at Roseland Ballroom was a tour de force for the entertainer. It was the only time she would perform her new album, 4, almost completely and to a very limited audience. The 26-song DVD, Live at Roseland, is Beyoncé's most personal to date. In addition to performing the new album, she takes fans on a journey through her career from the beginnings of Destiny's Child at nine years of age, incorporating never before seen footage from her personal archives.
