在这部阿呆剧情片中,蔡扬名于１９９１年创作了《阿呆》，以一个自小就在贫困环境中成长的眷村孩子阿呆作为线索，讲述了一段令人触目惊心的少年往事。阿呆是个患有脑病的憨傻少年，为了逃离现实生活中的悲惨境遇，小小年纪就被人利用做了帮派的职业杀手，后果是可想而知的，杀人、断手、讨债、火并，几乎完全令他丧失了淳朴的自我本色，最后更是干掉了警察，甚至还亲手做掉了自己自小到大的玩伴阿程。他懵懂而不经世事，完全是在成人的利益交换中苟活，成为一个彻头彻尾的替代工具。警方扫黑时，林董带着情妇出国避风头，阿呆跟独守空房的林太太渐生情愫，但后来他仍被林太太出卖了。最终面临围捕，他的自杀行为已经表现出了他对社会现实与生活现实的双重绝望，同样也表现了创作者自身的悲观心态。
                    Jen, nicknamed Ah Dai, had been a rebellious child. He fled home the age of 16. A few years later, he became the driver of the leader of the Underworld, Mr. Lin. He was deeply moved by the kindness and care Mr. & Mrs. Lin showed him, grateful enough to do anything for them in return. Ah Dai observed the conflicts and struggle for privileges in the Underworld, and its strange interactions with the police. To evade the law, Mr. Lin fled abroad with his mistress as a wanted criminal. During Lin's absence, Ah Dai witnessed the crumbling of Lin's empire. Because of Ah Dai's loyalty or his sympathy with her, Mrs. Lin becomes attached to Ah Dai and eventually has his baby. However, when Mr. Lin comes back later to save his empire, Mrs. Lin chooses to give up her relationship with Ad Dai. As a way of repaying kindness, or even of showing his love, Ah Dai sacrifices his life to finish the last task Mrs. Lin asked him to do.
