在这部无辜者犯罪片中,En 1978, Théo est cantonnier dans une municipalité d'Ile-de-France. Sans éducation, sans parents, sans famille, il a été livré à lui-même jusqu'à l'âge adulte au point de souffrir de défauts d'élocution et d'un réel retard intellectuel. Deux braqueurs lui proposent de devenir leur complice et d'assurer la surveillance au cours du hold-up - a priori facile - d'une grande surface. Malheureusement, le braquage tourne au drame : un gendarme est abattu. Le meurtre est imputé à Théo, qui ne parvient pas à s'échapper, contrairement aux deux braqueurs. Dans les locaux de la police judiciaire, le pauvre homme est longuement interrogé. Lors de son procès, il est condamné à mort...
The film is based on real events be tween the years 1978-1980. Theo Grangier, a man without education, with no parents nor family, is involved in the robbery along with two recidivists. But the policeman is killed during a robbery. But Theo is the only one who is arrested and charged with murdering an officer of laws, even though the other two perpetrators are not found and Theo is not conclusively proved to be a murderer. He is later sentenced to death. The trial galvanizes the French society - Jean-Paul Sartre comes out publicly in favor of Theo Grunge...
