为了阻止奇夫里，并且彻底打掉他的网络，军情六处指派邦德去皇家赌场同奇夫里进行纸牌游戏，同时要击败他。在得到一大笔政府资金作为赌注后，“M”又在邦德的身边安排了韦斯帕·琳德--来自财政部的一名探员，以保证这些政府资金的安全。开始，韦斯帕对于邦德并不信任，使得邦德饱受骚扰。但是，当他们两个在奇夫里和他的手下发动的几次致命的袭击中幸存之后，韦斯帕渐渐地改变了对邦德的看法。在黑山，邦德联络上军情六处当地的老特工马西斯，以及菲力克斯·雷特，他们一起携手开始了同奇夫里的较量。马拉松式的赌博的背后，暗藏着狡诈的欺骗以及血腥的暴力，随着赌注的提高，正邪双方的斗争也渐渐地达到了新的高潮。
幕后制作：【迟到的“007前传”】
1954年5月，制片人兼导演格雷戈里·莱托夫从伊恩·弗莱明的手中购买了小说《皇家赌场》的部分版权，并且用六个月的时间同CBS一起制作并播出了一部一个小时的电视剧《铁金刚横扫皇家赌场》。在版权出售之前，小说《皇家赌场》并不成功，在平装本出版之前，该小说甚至更改了小说名，以及修改了部分内容，使其更加美国化一些，以博得北美读者的青睐，当时，弗莱明也十分需要那些出版的收入。在电视剧版播出一年以后，莱托夫便在原来价格的基础上又增加了六千美元，将《皇家赌场》的版权完全买下。这两次的版权出售后来被人们认为价格过于低廉，伊恩·弗莱明本人对此也追悔不已。当然了，他得到版权费后的第一件事情便是为自己购买了一辆价值三千美元的雷鸟车。格雷戈里·莱托夫于1960年12月14日去世之后，他的遗孀在1961年将《皇家赌场》的版权以75000 美元的价格转卖给查尔斯·K。·菲尔德曼。菲尔德曼于1967年制作并拍摄了搞笑版的《皇家赌场》(又译《铁金刚勇破皇家夜总会》)，由于这部影片情节荒诞，所以并没有被正式列入到007系列电影当中。
1999年，米高梅公司向索尼公司支付了一千万美元，获得了《皇家赌场》的版权。不久，米高梅公司便一纸诉状将索尼公司告上了法庭，指控索尼公司侵犯了邦德的版权，违反协议要拍摄《皇家赌场》，要求其赔偿四千万美元。最终，索尼公司付给米高梅五百万美元的赔偿，并将所有有关《皇家赌场》的版权移交给米高梅公司。然而，具有讽刺意味的是，索尼公司于2005年收购了米高梅公司，获得了包括制作以及发行《皇家赌场》等一系列电影的权力。
《皇家赌场》是伊恩·弗莱明的第一部詹姆斯·邦德小说，但却是最后一部被拥有007系列版权的EON Productions公司改编成为电影的。《皇家赌场》的拍摄完成，意味着EON Productions公司已经将所有伊恩·弗莱明关于詹姆斯·邦德的小说全部改编完成。
最具争议的演员人选
在丹尼尔·克雷格被正式宣布为第六任邦德的扮演者之前，还有几位演员也在考察范围内。制片人迈克尔·G·威尔森说，他们曾经考察超过200名演员，以其寻找到适合于扮演詹姆斯·邦德的最佳人选，这里面包括朱利安·麦克马洪、赫里尼克·罗森、多米尼克·韦斯特、杰拉德·巴特勒等等，同样出生在英国的亨利·卡维尔几乎获得了这个角色，但最终还是因为过于年轻而被放弃。
