Wind and power leads her to the beach on a lighthouse island, and there she finds the island's sole inhabitant, the lighthouse keeper Rasmus. He is a former painter who has realized his own limitations. Bitter and longing for solitude, he has taken this job outside civilization.
For him it is a nuisance having to take care of another human being, especially a woman who from the beginning is having an inexplicable effect on him. The two find each other anyway through their interests and contradictions. After a while however, Nina's husband comes to claim her, and the conflict escalates.
The withdrawn painter Rasmus works at a remote lighthouse when he finds a rowboat with an unconscious woman seemingly having tried to commit suicide. He wants to report her to the police, but she begs him not to, before he falls in love.
