The 17-year-old Lily is not easy: she works long hours as a cashier at a large supermarket; at home it does not butter with her mother, who has raised her alone and has a grudge against her, and with her mother's new partner. She finds solace with Alan, a black American soldier stationed in the Netherlands; they make plans to go to his family in America together. She has not told him that she is pregnant; he gives her confirmation that he would like it. Shortly before their departure, Alan is stabbed to the streets by a few racists. Lily's mother expects her to have the child removed, but Lily wants to keep it. She flees to the big city where she runs straight into the arms of a pimp, Ted. He lets her live in an apartment where previously a girl named Loni lived. After some annoying incidents she escapes from Ted with the help of neighbor Arend, who drives for Ted but blames him for driving Loni to death.
