The sculptress Tora Diidiken is a celebrity, both as an artist and as a socialite. Her 4th husband, the sculptor Gunnar Grahn, loves her deeply, but is jealous of her success. When he receives an invitation to participate in a competition to win the commission of adorning the square in Broköping with a new monument, he is excited. He tells Tora that he has to stay some weeks alone in their cottage, to work on a new statue, but he doesn't mention the competition. It is the rich widow Carolina Berg, who has donated 1 million kronor for this purpose. At a dinner party Carolina persuades the astute politician Lars Larsson to nominate her son Per-Olof as a top candidate for the regional election. In exchange his daughter Märta will become the fiancée of her son. In Stockholm Per-Olof happens to meet Tora Diidiken, who in him sees the ideal model for her new statue.
