George, a young spendthrift, is cast aside by Cora after he spent his last dollar. As he leaves he reproaches her so severely that she is frightened and threatens him with a pistol. He seizes it and it is accidentally discharged and she is wounded. Horrified he is about to kill himself when the police enter and she accuses him of attempted murder. He is sentenced to prison for ten years. She is scarred for life and broods over it until she is warned that her reason will be affected. George is released on parole after he has served less than half of his sentence. He falls in love with Marcelle and later marries her. She knows nothing of his criminal record as he has broken his parole and changed his name thus rendering himself liable to arrest. Cora has opened a gambling saloon.
